Running in the Hokuriku–Shin’etsu region lets you combine Japan’s deep history with wide-open nature in a single run.

In Nagano, you can jog quiet streets radiating from Zenko-ji Temple, follow riverside paths with mountain views, or head into the hills and ski-resort areas that turn into cool, green trail-running playgrounds in summer. The air is crisp, the seasons are dramatic, and post-run recovery in a local onsen feels like a built-in reward.

In Kanazawa, every run feels like a moving city tour: castle walls, samurai districts, teahouse streets, and riverside promenades all link together into beautiful “run-sightseeing” routes. Locals use the Saigawa and Asano rivers as their everyday running tracks, and you’re never far from a quiet path, a glimpse of the sea, or a traditional garden.

Beyond Nagano and Kanazawa, runners should look at Niigata and Toyama.
Niigata offers long, flat riverside and seaside routes along the Shinano River and the Sea of Japan—ideal for relaxed long runs.

Toyama combines scenic waterfront paths near the city with easy access to the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, where you can add hiking or light trail running in dramatic alpine landscapes.
